EFFICACY OF MISOPROSTOL IN THE TERMINATION OF FIRST TRIMESTER PREGNANCY FAILURE
Objective: To determine the efficacy of misoprostol in the termination of first trimester pregnancy Failure.
Material and Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out in the Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology,
Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar from 1st January to 31st December 2016. Total 108 cases were recruited
from OPD and admitted for termination of pregnancy with misoprostol alone who had first trimester pregnancy failure
after satisfying inclusion and exclusion criteria. After necessary work up patients were treated with vaginal misoprostol
alone according to our unit protocol. The primary outcome measures were to determine the frequency of successful
resolution of miscarriage without proceeding to surgical evacuation and those cases which proceeded to surgical
evacuation. The secondary outcome measures were to determine the incidence of common side effects associated
with misoprostol and also to study the induction to expulsion time.
Results: Total 108 cases were recruited. Complete expulsion occurred in 75 cases ( 69.44 %) and surgical evacuation
was needed in 33 cases ( 30.55%). Nausea occurred in 3 cases (2.77%), vomiting occurred in 2 cases (1.85%), pyrexia
occurred in 2 cases (1.85%), diarrhea in 1 case (0.92%) and heavy bleeding occurred in 15 cases ( 13.88%.)
Conclusion: Treatment of early pregnancy failure with misoprostol alone is efficient, acceptable, cost effective and safe
alternative to surgical evacuatio
