Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Cardiovascular disease commonly co-exist with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is a
significant cause of mortality in these patients. We conducted this study to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular
disease in patients hospitalized due to exacerbation of COPD.
Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive study conducted at Pulmonology Unit, KTH from 1st Oct 2016 till 28th
Feb 2017. All patients admitted with confirmed diagnosis of COPD exacerbation were enrolled. Patients in respiratory
distress, having pneumothorax or confusion were excluded. Appropriate patients management was started; age and
gender of the patients noted and Electrocardiograms (ECGs) were obtained for all patients while Echo was done for
those who had abnormal ECG. Cardiovascular disease was subcategorized into ischemic heart disease (ST/T changes
or left bundle branch block and/or wall motion abnormality), Cardiac failure (FS <30% on Echo) and arrhythmias (Atrial
Fibrillation, Multifocal atrial tachycardia or ventricular ectopics). The data was collected in a structured proforma and
analyzed via spss 19. Results were presented as tables/graphs. Frequencies/percentages were calculated for qualitative
variables (sex and Cardiac disease).
Results: A total of 163 patients were recruited with mean age of 62 ± 8 years, FEV1 36 ± 12.3 SD and males constituted
44.7%. Ischemic heart disease was found in 20.72% %, cardiac failure in 10.68 % and arrhythmia in 27%. Conclusion:
The prevalence of cardiovascular disease was high in our patients hospitalized for COPD which should be considered
in management plan of these patients.
