FREQUENCY OF ATRIAL FIBRILLATION IN PATIENTS WITH HYPERTHYROIDISM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine frequency of Atrial fibrillation in patients with hyperthyroidism.
Methodology. A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in Medical C Unit, Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar.
A total of 88 patients with hyperthyroidism were included in the study.
Main outcome measures: Presence or absence of Atrial Fibrillation in patients with hyperthyroidism.
Results. In this study mean age was 40 years with SD 1.26. Fifty five(63%) patients were female and 33(37%) patients
were male. Forty five percent patients had hyperthyroidism in less than one year, 30% patients had hyperthyroidism
from 1-2 years and 25% patients had hyperthyroidism in more than 3 years. Atrial fibrillation was observed in 15%
patients and atrial fibrillation was not observed in 85% patients.
Conclusion. Atrial fibrillation is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in overt as well as hyperthyroidism.
