FREQUENCY OF GALLBLADDER MUCOCELE IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING OPEN CHOLECYSTECTOMY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: A gallbladder mucocele, also known as hydrops, is a condition where the gallbladder is stretched due to
the accumulation of mucus or clear watery fluid in the hollow organ. When left untreated, the gallbladder can become
infected, press on the stomach thereby partly blocking it and gallbladder rupture is also possible. Although a mucocele
is not common, it must be suspected and monitored for in the event of gallstones. Cholecystectomy is the definitive
treatment and performed when the gallbladder becomes symptomatic with gallstones, mucocele or other conditions.
Objective: To determine the frequency of gallbladder mucocele in patients undergoing surgery for cholecystectomy.
Material and Methods: This cross sectional (Descriptive) study of 12 months duration from 10th Jan 2016 to 30th December
2016 was conducted at Surgical Department, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Hospital, Peshawar in which sample
size was 159 patients, using 11.7%7 proportion of gall bladder mucocele, 5% margin of error and 95% confidence interval
under WHO software. More over consecutive (Non-Probability) sampling technique was used for sample collection.
Results: Our study shows that 13% patients. Mean age was 40 years ± 11.3 SD. Thirty five percent patients were male
and (65%) patients were female. More over gallbladder mucocele among 159 patients was analyzed as gallbladder
mucocele were found in 21(13%) patients while 138(87%) patients didn’t had gallbladder mucocele.
Conclusion: Our study concludes that the incidence of gallbladder mucocele was 13% in the patients undergoing
surgery for cholecystectomy
