Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Gallstones is the most common billiary pathology in the world and it is on the rise due to changes in the
life style. But 70-80% asymptomatic gallstones are usually diagnosed by Ultrasound, done for un related abdominal
complaints and 1-2% may develop symptoms per year. Saturation of bile, dysfunctional Gall bladder emptying and
crystallization are the possible mechanisms of gallstone formation. While increasing age, female sex and obesity are the
confirmed risk factors. Moreover, diabetes has also been associated with increased risk of gall stone disease, because
these subjects have autonomic neuropathy, obesity and hyperlipidemia. But a definite link between gallstone disease
and diabetes has yet to be established and a debate is going on. However, the diabetic patients are more prone to
develop early and serious complications due to Gallstone disease. The objective of this study determine the frequency
of gallstones in diabetic patients with body mass index presenting with abdominal pain, to the Surgical department.
Material & methods: This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted at the Department of Surgery unit ‘B’,
Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar over a period of two years from July 2015 to June 2017 on 127 patients, to look
for frequency of Gallstone Disease in the diabetic patients with body mass index presenting to the surgical department
with abdominal pain. Data were compiled and analyzed with SPSS 20.
Results: Out of the total 127 diabetic patients, 43(33.85%) were males & 84(66.14%) females. Gallstones were present
in 42(33.7%) patients, of which, 11 were males & 31 were females. Most of the patients with gallstone disease belonged
to the older age group & had increased body mass index (BMI) as well.
Conclusion: Diabetic subjects are more prone to develop gallstones & the resultant complications than the normal
population. These subjects must be screened early & counseled appropriately
