Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Breast cancer is the commonest malignancy of females all over the world and second leading cause
of death due to cancer among females. Hormonal therapy has an established role in breast cancer. The presence of
hormone receptor is the basis of molecular classification of breast cancer with prognostic value as well. Many hormone
receptors are identified which may be estrogen or progesterone dependent. New ones include HER-2/Neu receptor
which are usually associated with poor prognosis.
Objective: To determine the frequency of HER-2/Neu receptor positivity in patients with breast cancer.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted at Department of Surgery, Hayatabad
Medical Complex, Peshawar from May 2015 to Feb 2016. A total of 137 women diagnosed with carcinoma breast
were selected in a consecutive manner from the out patient department and tissue of tumor was sent to laboratory for
estrogen and progesterone status, grade of tumor, histological type and HER-2/Neu Receptors status. All the data was
entered and analyzed in SPSS version 16.
Results: The mean age group of patients in our study was 50.5± 6.76. 23.4% were in grade I tumor stage, 50.4%
in grade II and 26.3% were in grade III tumor stage. Ductal and lobular carcinomas were 38% and 62% respectively.
HER-2/NEU receptor positivity was found in 29.2% of patients.
Conclusion: Routine testing for HER-2/neu receptor over expression is recommended in all patients of breast cancer
