Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable, treatable and progressive disease
characterized by persistent airflow limitation and is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome which is characterized by abdominal
obesity, dyslipidemia, raised blood pressure and glucose intolerance. The purpose of the study was to assess
the frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in wards/OPDs of cardiology and pulmonology department Khyber
Teaching Hospital, Peshawar. All patients diagnosed with COPD, irrespective of duration of disease, were included in the
study. All the patients were assessed according to the 5 parameters of metabolic syndrome i.e., blood pressure, fasting
serum glucose, serum triglycerides, serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol and waist circumference. The presence
of at least any three of aforementioned five parameters fulfilled the criteria for the presence of metabolic syndrome.
Results: Out of 126 patients, 55 (43.7%) were males while 56.3% (n = 71) were females. The mean age of the patients
was 60.85 (SD + 11.028) years. The frequency of metabolic syndrome was found as 38.9%. The most frequently occurring
parameter of metabolic syndrome was increased waist circumference (91.83%).
Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome occurs with increased frequency in patients suffering from COPD, with increased
waist circumference being the most commonly occurring component
