Abstract

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Acute Febrile Syndrome (AFS) or Illness, a rapid onset of fever with symptoms such as headache, chills
or muscle and joint pains, is common in children worldwide, especially in those living in tropical areas. Urinary Tract
Infections (UTIs) are one of the most prevalent extra-intestinal bacterial infections. It represents one of the most common
diseases encountered in medical practice affecting people of all ages from the neonate to the geriatric age group.
Urinary Tract Infections are common in children.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Pediatrics Hayatabad Medical Complex
Peshawar from 12/11/2014 to 12/05/2015. Through a Descriptive Cross Sectional Study Design, a total of 205 cases of
acute febrile illness were selected in a consecutive manner from OPD and tested for the presence of UTI.
Results: The mean age group of our sample was 2.6 + 1.4 years of which 46.3% were male and 53.7% were female
children. Most of the sampled children were in the age group between 3 to 5 years (40.5%). On urine culture, UTI was
recorded in 27.3% of children with high percentage among female patients.
Conclusion: Urinary tract infection is quite common in our pediatric population below the age of 5 years. It is a serious
calamity especially among female children and we recommend more research to find out risk factors related to this
