ABSTRACT
Objectives:To compare the efficacy of ciprofloxacin with ceftriaxone in the treatment of typhoid fever .
Subjects & Methods: This Randomized Control Trial study was carried out in the Department of Medicine Hayatabad
Medical Complex Peshawar from October 2016 to April 2017.All patients from both gender and age 18- 60 years and
patients with a positive Blood culture for Salmonella.( Typhoid Fever) were included in the study. Those patients were
excluded with deteriorated general condition , Patients with Hyperpyrexia, Hypotension and Melena, Patients with
Bleeding per Rectum, Patients with disturbed level of consciousness, Patients who were Malarial Parasite positive and
Patients who had already taken in antibiotics in the recent days. Written informed consent was obtained. The recruited
patients were divided into ‘Group-A’ for I/V ciprofloxacin and ‘Group-B’ for I/V ceftriaxone.
Results: Total 92 (46 in each two group) patients were studied. Mean age of the patients was 47.42±9.606 ranging
from 18 to 60 years of age .In frequency distribution, there were 30 (32.6%) male and 16(17.4%) female who were
administrated ciprofloxacin while 15(16.3%) male and 31(33.7%) female were administrated ceftriaxone .In frequency
distribution of both groups with efficacy, there were 38 (41.3%) found effective who were administrated ciprofloxacin
while 44(47.8%) were administrated ceftriaxone. There were 45(48.9%) male and 47(51.1%) female.There were 64(69.6%)
positive and 28(30.4%) negative.In frequency of resolution of fever ,there were 82(89.1%) resolved and 10(10.9%) taken
more time to resolved.In frequency of culture of patients there were 82(89.1%) found effective after antibiotics given
and 10(10.9%) taken more time to resolved.
Conclusion: The results of our study proved that ceftriaxone is more effective than ciprofloxacin in the treatment of
typhoid fever and ceftriaxone should be used as drug of choice in typhoid fever .
